In memoriam: Col. (Ret.) Sidney G. Oaksmith (’78)


Col. (Ret.) Sidney G. Oaksmith Col. (Ret.) Sidney G. Oaksmith

Aug. 15, 2015 – Col. (Ret.) Sidney G. Oaksmith (’78 B.S. forestry) of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away on October 9, 2014, at the age of 59 after a long battle with esophageal cancer.

Upon graduation from Virginia Tech, Oaksmith was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in the basic branch of Field Artillery, where he served for over 26 years. He attended the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses and is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia; the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania; and the Airborne, Air Assault, and Ranger Schools. His many assignments include two tours in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as serving in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He also served as a political-military planner for the Directorate for Strategic Plans and Policy, Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Army Achievement Medal.

Upon retiring from the Army, Oaksmith began his civilian career as a business developer for L-3 MPRI National Group in Alexandria, Virginia. He later went on to become vice president of operations for L-3 MPRI Training Technology Group (TTG) in Columbia, Maryland. He left the defense contracting world and went to work for First Command Financial Services in Annapolis, Maryland, where he could enjoy life and help people achieve financial peace of mind.
