In memoriam: William W. (Bill) Bolling (’70)

Nov. 13, 2015 – William W. (Bill) Bolling passed away Aug. 25, 2015, at the age of 71. Bolling attended Virginia Tech after serving in the U.S. Army and graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s in forestry and wildlife. Upon graduation, he accepted a position with the Farm Home Administration and later worked as a paralegal with the law firm of Schelin & Herrell.

Bolling and his friend, Gary Farmer, bought an old gristmill in Lebanon and renovated it into the Old Mill Restaurant, which opened for business in 1980. As a restaurant owner, Bolling set the standard for recycling by reducing solid waste by 50 percent. He encouraged the town and county to work together in setting up recycling programs on a widespread basis.

Bolling was elected to the Lebanon Town Council, where he served diligently and faithfully for 31 years. He was active in supporting all community outreaches and was highly sensitive to the needs of others, especially those who have fallen on hard times.
