Bradley Shoemaker (’09) earns Montana SAF Young Forester Leadership Award

Bradley Shoemaker

Nov. 7, 2016 – Bradley Shoemaker (’09 B.S. forestry) received the 2015 Young Forester Leadership Award from the Montana Society of American Foresters (SAF). The award recognizes “outstanding leadership by a young forestry professional in the development and promotion of an individual program or project, or for a sustained leadership role benefiting the practice of forestry and the Society of American Foresters.” He serves as chair of the Eastern Montana Chapter of the Montana SAF.

Since graduating, Shoemaker has worked for the U.S. Forest Service, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, focusing on landscape-scale forestry projects and their impacts on wildland fire in the area. He earned a master’s in emergency management from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts, where his research focused on wildland fire training systems and whether they have successfully reduced burnover fatalities over the last 70 years.

Shoemaker recently accepted a position as director of Yellowstone County’s Department of Disaster and Emergency Services, where he is in charge of numerous disaster responses, including wildland fire. He also serves as the Montana county’s rural fire chief.
