Outstanding recent alumnus

Jeremy Stovall Jeremy Stovall

Aug. 15, 2014 – Jeremy Stovall (’10 Ph.D. forestry) received this year’s Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award – Graduate Degree in recognition of his early career accomplishments.

Stovall, assistant professor of silviculture at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, teaches dendrology, silviculture, field silviculture, intensive silviculture, and timber cruising; leads the Silviculture and Ecophysiology Lab; is actively involved in outreach programs targeting landowners and practicing foresters; and serves in a variety of leadership roles in the Society of American Foresters and the Texas Forestry Association. He advises the university’s Sylvans Forestry Club and works toward developing resources for his undergraduate students such as an online textbook and interactive tree identification quizzes.

His research has been primarily focused on the ecophysiological and silvicultural aspects of restoring degraded and disturbed forested ecosystems. In an attempt to create applied solutions to forest management problems, his projects have ranged from creating basic silvicultural tools such as site index curves and volume tables for pine plantations growing on reclaimed strip mines to examining the ecological effects and efficacy of herbicides for controlling invasive species such as Chinese tallow in bottomland oak forests.

“I am honored to be selected for this award and thankful for having been nominated,” said Stovall. “This is a true honor given the high quality of work the college’s graduate alumni are currently doing throughout the country.”
