Undergraduate Student

Walker Baldwin

Senior, Geography

I grew up in Huddleston, Va., a small town located on a portion of Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County. My family is from Lynchburg, Va., and has always loved and enjoyed living near the Appalachian Mountains. While I was growing up, I fell in love with anything that would allow me to be outside, which consisted mainly of riding horses, hunting, fishing, kayaking, and playing golf. I guess I was pretty lucky to have had the opportunity to grow up on Smith Mountain Lake and enjoy the rural surrounding areas.

Since I have been at college, I have been engaged in many community service and sporting events. Along with hunting and fishing, I play basketball, golf, softball, Frisbee golf, and guitar, and enjoy going wakeboarding. While working during school I have gained many skills as an electrician, chef, and in geographical information systems. I also recently went on a storm chase trip with the Virginia Tech geography department.

When I started classes at Virginia Tech, I began as a business management major. The more classes that I completed in this field the more I realized I didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life. I decided to make the switch to geography towards the end of my sophomore year when I saw how much my roommate liked the classes that he was taking. Once I began taking classes in my major, I loved everything about it. I am currently a senior and I plan on getting a job using geographical information systems when I graduate.
