Undergraduate Student

Davis Gilbert

Geography and Multimedia Journalism

Expected Graduation Date: May 2016

Every day can be an adventure if you choose to make it one. Within a five-hour drive, I can touch the sandstone in the Red River Gorge or brace against the frigid, biting wind as I walk through ankle deep snow in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Blacksburg’s backyard is incredible as well, and the New River Gorge has ample climbing, hiking, mountain biking, road biking, kayaking, slack lining, and the most beautiful scenic drives in the state.

Virginia Tech has continued to shape and mold me. Each club I’ve joined (SalsaTech, Outdoor Club, VT Expressions, Skate Club, and Surf Club) has given me a new skill and allowed me to meet people from all different walks of life. The folks at Virginia Tech are kind, warm, and open. I’ve found that with any interest I have, I can not only nd someone with a similar interest, but I can also learn considerably from them. The university may be big, but you can nd always nd your family.

Each new class I take opens my eyes wider and wider to this vast and wonderful world. I’m fascinated by the interaction between humans and the environment, and I love that every single person, place, and thing has a story to tell. I want to capture that interaction and share it with others. I want to make people feel and think. And even more importantly, I want them to act, because working together can bring about real change in the world, and a re can begin with a single spark.

After I graduate, I would love the opportunity to combine my love of traveling, people, photography, filmography, writing, art, and lifelong learning. I applied to the Leadership Institute so that I could inspire myself and others to reach their full potential, meet leaders in the environmental community, and gain real-world experience.

College has been an amazing period of growth, fun, and learning. I would not trade my experience for anything. But there is an entire world out there, and I’m excited to see all I can, learn all I can, and love all I can. Change can be unsettling, but it doesn’t have to be frightening.

As Alan Watts once said, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”

And my feet won’t stop tapping.
