Wildlife Conservation

Expected Graduation Date: May 2016

  • Minor: Forestry

I grew up on a working ranch in Lexington, Virginia. It was there that I developed a love for all places muddy, damp, and full of life. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I replied a herpetologist, which in my opinion is a large word for a kid barely in middle school. Many nights I would return to my house, dip net in hand and covered head to toe in mud.

Approaching college, my interest in herpetofauna extended into other vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and pretty much all of Earth’s biota. I cannot express enough the appreciation I have for the knowledge gained with the help of Virginia Tech and the College of Natural Resources and Environment.

During my time at Virginia Tech, I have had the privilege of being a part of many rewarding work and volunteer experiences. I interned with the U.S. Forest Service for two summers, interned at National Great Rivers Research and Education Center in Alton, Missouri, assisted with a camera trapping study in Belize, and various other activities. This year it is my honor to serve as the Camera Trapping Chair for the Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

The future can sometimes be daunting, but I know my time and experience at Virginia Tech has prepared me. I look forward to the refinement the Leadership Institute will provide. Upon graduation, I plan on doing a few years of field technician work before attending graduate school.
