Dear Parents,

Hello. I’d like to introduce myself to you as Dean of our College of Natural Resources and Environment at Virginia Tech. I love what we are all about and know that our work in the college is critical for a sustainable future.

You are most likely very involved in the decisions regarding your son’s or daughter’s college education. As we all know, a university education is an investment of a lifetime, both financially and also from the perspective of creating lifelong opportunities. I’d like to share with you my perspectives on our College of Natural Resources and Environment and offer to assist you with any questions you may have regarding study in our college.

Our college enjoys one of the best reputations in North America across our academic departments and disciplines. In fact, we have been recognized as the #1 program in the U.S. the past two consecutive years by USA Today College Edition. If you want one of the very best educations in natural resources and environmental disciplines, you can’t go wrong in studying with us. Our peer programs widely recognize us as one of the very best places to study. Employers recognize us as one of the very best places to study. Our alumni give strong testament to the quality of the education they received.

We are very proud of the personal attention we give our students. Students that transfer into our college are always pleasantly surprised at the collegial, family atmosphere that we foster and enjoy in our college. Faculty in our college get to know their students on a first-name basis. We are recognized for our excellent advising and outstanding teaching, and our faculty bring world-class research experiences into the classroom every day.

Our Advising Center is a student-centered support service in the college. Students can access the office at any time during the week. Our Advising Center staff is first and foremost about student success and will lend a helpful hand to help students navigate schedules, class selection, and career advising and dealing with difficult issues students sometimes face.

The college hosts an annual career fair with participation from many public and private sector employers. The annual fair is held in early in the fall and allows our students to engage one-on-one with our employer partners. These employers have an array of part-time, summer, and permanent positions available each year. In 2016 we were at capacity with external partners and over 350 students visited the career fair.

A university education can enable your son or daughter to be very successful in a professional career path; hard work and perseverance are required on the student’s part. We challenge our students intellectually and personally to achieve to their potential – which is why we are here and called to these professions as university educators.

I want you to know that we are here to assist you in any way possible. I welcome your phone call or email to me personally and will be glad to respond to your inquiries. We are very proud of all that we do in our college, and we welcome the opportunity to work with your son or daughter on their educational and career goals.

Warm regards,

Paul M. Winistorfer
