Undergraduate Student

Diana McDermott

Major: Economics with concentration in Business Administration

Expected Graduation Date: May 2017

  • Minor: Entrepreneurship

My name is Diana McDermott. I am a junior majoring in Economics and minoring in Entrepreneurship. When I first came into Virginia Tech I decided to apply to Innovate Entrepreneurial Living Learning Community. That decision impacted the rest of my undergraduate experience here so far. Innovate was a brand new program when I was accepted. The first thing they asked us in the management class required for living in the community was “How comfortable are you with ambiguity?” The question struck me as odd, but after two years of piloting a new organization, serving on the executive board, and mentoring the newest students; I had to become comfortable with ambiguity. I decided through that experience that I wanted to be an entrepreneur and start my own company someday. Before starting my own company, I would love having a mentor to teach me about how they run their business and someone who can share their wealth of real world knowledge and practical experience. I admire companies that have values, and a mission statement that holds their company and the way they conduct business to a higher standard. I would very much like to start my own startup company that has a product that somehow affects the world for better or possibly working on innovating pre-existing products to be better for the environment.
