Undergraduate Student

Tyneshia Griffin

Majors: Geography + Sociology

Expected Graduation Date: May 2019

  • Minor: Spanish

I am currently a Sophomore majoring in Geography and minoring in Spanish at Virginia Tech. I am planning to declare a second major in Sociology with a concentration in Research Methods. As an undergraduate studying Geography and Sociology, I aim to thoroughly understand the interconnections between social systems and environmental sustainability. This will support my lifelong career goal of integrating sustainable environmental values into community development models within low-income, high-poverty urban areas across the United States. This career goal stems from my belief that the perpetuation of social problems in impoverished communities, such as gender-inequality, is directly connected to natural resource and environmental politics.

Numerous leadership opportunities have challenged me to identify and utilize my strengths as a future leader in environmental sustainability. These opportunities also solidified my intentions to engage directly with marginalized communities. Some examples of my leadership experiences include: advocating global literacy with the non-profit organization buildOn; educating K-5 youth about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM); interning with the non-profit Track’d STEAM Camp; and supporting incoming freshman as a Resident Advisor (RA) within Virginia Tech’s Housing and Residence Life (HRL).

In my future career, I hope to continue to develop my leadership strengths, such as critical thinking, active listening, adaptability to change, and cross cultural understanding while expanding my knowledge of geospatial information systems (GIS), social research methods, and creative writing. I look forward to a lifetime of learning, teaching, relationship-building, and courageous, passionate activism under the discipline of environmental sustainability and the principles of human rights.
