Undergraduate Student

Tharmelinggem Pillai

Major: Geophysics

Expected Graduation Date: May 2017

My name is Tharmelinggem, and I’m from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As an international student, I have been exposed to multicultural, multiethnic, multinational environments for years. This helps me to approach situations and problems from a unique perspective.

I have been involved in undergraduate research of analyzing geochemical evidence for euxinia during the late Devonian. I was the President of the US East Coast Presidential Council responsible for thousands of Malaysian students over 26 states in the United States. I managed to lead my team towards successfully organizing dozens of events and projects that have benefitted thousands of participants. And I am currently serving as the Vice President of the Malaysian Students Global Alliance where we seek to establish an international network that is focused on activism and professional development. I strive to utilize my leadership skills in order to help others see potential in themselves and their communities.

I believe that sustainability is an ideal where we try to incorporate long-term thinking into the short-term, capitalistic lens. It is about creating a balance in the world. I hope that my work in the future revolves around trying to achieve that balance in whichever organization that I serve.
